Republic of Zambia
History
Zambia is a land-locked nation in Western Africa. Upon receiving independence from the United Kingdom on 24 October 1964, the nation officially became recognised as the Republic of Zambia. In the mid 1970’s, Zambia suffered economic hardships due to the price of its principle export, copper, declining worldwide; by the 1990’s, Zambia’s per capita debt promised to be one of the highest in the world.
Faith
While Zambia is predominately a Christian nation, the Christian faith can be easily influenced by other traditional religions. It is not uncommon for a newer Zambian Christian to still go to see the local witch doctor or want to have more than 1 wife, etc. There is a real need for prayer for our missionaries to guide the people in the ways of God, as well as for the Zambians to have an understanding of God’s laws.
The People
With a population of almost 16 million people with a vast array of ethnic backgrounds, Zambians are said to have over 70 different languages, with just over over 60% of the population able to read and write. God’s Work Foundation aims to bridge the gap in order to offer God’s love to all. Unfortunately, there is a high instance of poverty in Zambia. While the population continues to grow, much of that population growth can be attributed to uneducated women who live in rural areas – children are seen as a sign of prestige, and parents also expect to lose some children at some point due to the high mortality rate of the country. Much of the mortality rate may be attributed to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS within the nation.
